Phi Phi Snorkelling: Best Spots & What You'll See

Updated 26 June 2026

Snorkeller floating above a colourful coral reef full of tropical fish in clear Phi Phi water

The best snorkelling around Phi Phi is at Bamboo Island, Loh Samah Bay (behind Maya Bay), Nui Bay and the reefs off Phi Phi Don. You can expect clear, warm water with hard and soft corals, clouds of tropical fish, harmless blacktip reef sharks and occasional sea turtles. Most boat tours include snorkelling gear, and the calmest, clearest conditions are in the November–April dry season.

Best Snorkelling Spots in the Phi Phi Islands

  • Top spots: Bamboo Island, Loh Samah Bay, Nui Bay and Phi Phi Don's reefs.
  • Expect tropical fish, reef sharks and turtles in clear, warm water.
  • Gear is included on most tours — bring your own mask if you can.
  • Best visibility is in the dry season (Nov–Apr).

Maya Bay is the headline, but the water around the Phi Phi Islands is where many travellers have their best moments. The reefs here are shallow, warm and astonishingly alive — and you don’t need to dive to enjoy them. For the wider area, see our Phi Phi Islands guide.

Where is the best snorkelling in Phi Phi?

  • Bamboo Island (Ko Mai Phai). The easiest win: a gently shelving reef in clear, shallow water, ideal for beginners and families.
  • Loh Samah Bay. Just behind Maya Bay, this is where many tours let you snorkel — corals, reef fish and frequent blacktip reef shark sightings.
  • Nui Bay. A smaller, quieter cove on Phi Phi Leh with healthy coral close to shore.
  • Phi Phi Don house reefs. Spots like Loh Dalum and the eastern bays reward an easy swim from the beach.

What you’ll see underwater

Phi Phi’s reefs host hard and soft corals, anemones with resident clownfish, parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and shimmering shoals of fusiliers. The stars are the harmless blacktip reef sharks that patrol the shallows, and — if you’re lucky — a green or hawksbill turtle grazing on the seagrass. It’s a genuinely world-class spread for such accessible water.

Best time to snorkel in Phi Phi

The dry season (November–April) brings the clearest visibility, often 10–20 metres, while green-season rain and swell can stir up the water. Early mornings are calmest and least crowded. Plan around it with our best time to visit guide.

Snorkelling gear and what to bring

Most tours include a mask, snorkel and life jacket, but a personal mask that fits well beats a rental every time. Use the packing checklist below, and remember reef-safe sunscreen only — never stand on or touch the coral, and don’t feed the fish or sharks, which harms them and changes their behaviour.

Snorkelling safety around Phi Phi

Wear the provided life jacket if you’re not a confident swimmer — currents can run between islands. Stay with your group and the boat, watch for other vessels at busy stops, and keep a respectful distance from wildlife. Blacktip sharks are harmless, as our Maya Bay sharks guide explains, but you should still let them move freely.

Snorkelling tours vs diving

Snorkelling reaches almost all of Phi Phi’s best shallow reefs, so you don’t need to dive to see corals, fish and sharks. Diving opens up deeper sites like Bida Nok and the King Cruiser wreck, but for most visitors a snorkel tour delivers the highlights with none of the certification.

Snorkelling gear: rent or bring your own?

Tours almost always provide a mask, snorkel and life jacket, which is fine for a casual look. But a rental mask that doesn’t seal is the fastest way to ruin a snorkel session, so if you snorkel often, bring your own well-fitting mask — it’s the single biggest upgrade to the experience. A snug rash guard adds sun and jellyfish protection, and a cheap waterproof phone case or action camera lets you capture the reef without risking your phone. Fins are nice but not essential at the shallow Phi Phi sites.

Snorkelling for beginners and non-swimmers

You don’t need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy Phi Phi’s reefs. The provided life jacket keeps you buoyant, and the best beginner spots — especially Bamboo Island — have shallow, calm water close to shore. Practise breathing through the snorkel in the shallows first, keep a relaxed horizontal float, and stay near the boat or your guide. Many operators are used to first-timers and will keep an eye on you; just flag it when you board.

Reef-safe snorkelling and protecting the coral

The reefs you’ve come to see are fragile and recovering, so snorkel gently. Use only reef-safe sunscreen (or cover up with a rash guard instead), never stand on or touch the coral, keep your fins clear of the reef, and don’t chase, touch or feed the fish and sharks. The same rules that brought Maya Bay back from the brink apply underwater everywhere around Phi Phi — leave no trace and the reef stays worth visiting.

Snorkelling vs scuba diving in Phi Phi

For most visitors, snorkelling reaches the highlights: Phi Phi’s best reefs are shallow, so corals, reef fish, turtles and blacktip sharks are all visible from the surface. Scuba diving opens up deeper, more advanced sites — Bida Nok, Bida Nai and the King Cruiser wreck — and richer marine encounters, but it requires certification, more time and more money. If you’re undecided, start with a snorkel tour; if the reef captivates you, a discover-scuba session is an easy next step from Phi Phi Don.

The best snorkelling tours

To maximise reef time rather than beach time, choose a tour built around the water. Our Maya Bay snorkelling tour focuses on the reefs around Phi Phi Leh, while the 7-island hopping tour strings together multiple snorkel stops in a single day. Compare them, and every other option, on the tours page.

Make the most of your time in the water

A few small habits dramatically improve a snorkel day: defog your mask before you get in, enter calmly and float rather than thrash, breathe slowly to conserve energy, and stay aware of boats and your group. Go early when the water is clearest and the reefs least disturbed, bring your own mask if you can, and protect the coral with reef-safe sunscreen and a hands-off approach. Do that, and Phi Phi’s shallow, shark-and-turtle-filled reefs reward you with some of the easiest world-class snorkelling in Asia. Pick a water-focused trip on the tours page.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best snorkelling in Phi Phi?

Bamboo Island has the easiest, clearest shallow reef. Loh Samah Bay behind Maya Bay, Nui Bay and the house reefs off Phi Phi Don are also excellent, with corals, tropical fish and reef sharks.

Can you see sharks while snorkelling in Phi Phi?

Yes, often — blacktip reef sharks are common and harmless. Sightings are a highlight, not a hazard; they're shy and keep their distance.

Do tours provide snorkelling gear?

Almost all do — a mask, snorkel and usually a life jacket are included. If you have your own well-fitting mask, bring it for comfort and clearer vision.

Is the water clear for snorkelling?

In the dry season, very — visibility is often excellent. Green-season rain and swell can stir up the water, so November to April is the best window for snorkelling.
